The Bowie Concert Tape Files: Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium – 31 January 2004

I wouldn’t normally include an incomplete show as part of these files however, I felt compelled to write up this fantastic concert from Los Angeles during the “A Reality” tour at the end of January 2004.  The missing songs are Ashes To Ashes, White Light, White Heat and I’m Afraid Of Americans.  The plus side is that this concert was recorded direct from Earl Slicks earpiece on the night so it is a 10 out of 10 recording and has Bowie in fine fettle throughout.  So essentially, that is why I have decided to include in the concert tapes files.  Another cool aspect from the show is that Bowie decides to play a snippet from Space Oddity.  He hadn’t performed the song live since his birthday concert show in New York dating all the way back to January 1997.  Just over 20 years ago now.

The recording itself first became available in the latter months of 2008 and, as previously mentioned, it was a copy taken from the ear monitor of Earl Slick.  There is a good mix of audience noise mixed in with the concert itself and everything is loud and clear.  The tour itself was one of epic proportions covering no less than 112 shows, his longest tour and sadly his last.  It all started on October 7 in Copenhagen and curtailed abruptly on June 25 at the Hurricane Festival in Germany due to his continued poor health.  A further 13 shows leading up to late July were canceled following the German festival appearance.

This show was also the first of three consecutive nights in LA at The Shrine Auditorium.  There are very few bootlegs from the “A Reality” tour that match this one for quality so you could do far worse than finding a copy for yourself.  It’s sad in a way when you listen to shows from this period because you now know that Bowie is in the final few months of his life as a live performer.
