A letter of love for an album of our times

All the way back in February 2004, I met a girl who became a wonderful partner for almost 3 years and not long after we met, she wrote this beautiful essay on Bowie’s Hunky Dory album and what it meant to her on a personal level.

I have always loved reading other peoples interpretations of Bowie’s work purely because there are so many ways to explain it all with no real set answers in place.  To be honest, reading  into Bowie’s life paves the way for consummate frustration because there has always been and always will be a great deal of mystery placed upon it.  There have, of course been a few writers here and there that have, in my humble opinion managed to crack the golden eggs of Bowie’s career though they always remain few and far between despite continued attempts from a cast of thousands to decipher it all.

Even to this day, I still meet young teenage and twenty something fans who are left baffled by their efforts to work out the Hunky Dory album and what it all means.  That’s the beauty of a truly masterful album isn’t it?  You can sit around with friends for hours and still not edge your way to the answers you are after.  So please, enjoy this letter from a most treasured human being that entered my life some twelve years ago…….
