I have to say this straight up.
Most David Bowie fans are not going to like this new song one iota! Well, until they allow “Sue (or in a season of crime)” the chance it well and truly deserves.
In March last year, and somewhat out of nowhere, Bowie returned to save our souls with the magnificent “The Next Day” LP and some 18 months later he returns with a career defining best of compilation, “Nothing Has Changed” which covers his 50 year career starting with his debut single, “Liza Jane” and moving all the way through to the new single.
My first impressions of “Sue (or in a season of crime)” were tinged with Eric Dolphy meets Charlie Mingus undertones. Bowie has, at long last followed through on his threat to release a proper tasty jazz cut. There are sprinklings of his 1995 sojourn, “1. Outside” and even a slight tinge of the chaos that was “Lodger” in 1979 on this epic 7 minute plus opus.
Even at 67, Bowie still has the ability to surprise us all with the direction he takes. One can only hope there is a full blown album in the works for release in 2015.
