A leader for our times……

Today evolved into a most delicious sunny affair which led Kat and I to take a walk through Milton Keynes parkways in the early afternoon.  The weather was just too good be left indoors so after a most hearty brunch we showered and made our way into the great outdoors around us.

Along the way we stumbled over a series of monuments at the peak of Campbell Park just outside the city.  Each monument was dedicated to a particular person, place or moment in time.  One such monument stood head and shoulders above the rest.  It was a memorial for Nelson Mandela day, celebrated annually on July 18 to remember the heroics achieved by one great man.

Following the Sharpeville massacre in which thousands of silent protesters were beaten and hundreds murdered on March 21 1960, Mandela became the principle target of the ruling government.  After his capture and arrest on November 7 1962 Mandela spent the next 28 years in prison until his release on February 11 1990.

During his time inside Mandela’s name and image were banished from South African society which, in turn led to his immortal status as he secretly led a peoples revolution from the confines of his prison cell. On December 10 1993 Mandela was awarded the Noble Peace prize for his continued fight against apartheid and the suppression of black South African’s.  The following year he became South Africa’s first black President, a position he held until 1999 when he voluntarily stepped down from the leadership.

Sadly we lost one of the worlds most powerful and important human beings on December 5 2013.  A man who will live long in our memories and hearts for his tireless work to give every human being equal opportunities.
